The Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department was one of the first few Departments with which SMVEC, Puducherry started in 2000.It is currently the largest multidisciplinary Department at SMVEC. The Department has, at present, total faculty strength of 22 and 6 technical assistants. The Department offers B.Tech and M.Tech Programmes in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The current sanctioned strength of B.Tech and M.Tech student intake during the first semester are 180 and 18 respectively.
Faculty are encouraged to take independent initiatives with collective responsibility in all the relevant academic and R&D dimensions - teaching, curriculum development, graduate research supervision, R&D, continuing education or organization of conferences, symposia, etc. They have ample freedom to associate as members of teams with other faculty, research engineers or with faculty in interdisciplinary areas.
Mission
The mission of the Department is to provide quality technical education to the students, to expose them to the recent developments, to motivate them towards success and to prepare them to face the future challenges with confidence and courage.
Vision & Goals
We envision to be an effective and competent source of technical manpower for the current and
future industrial requirements.
We intend to achieve this by:
Quality Policy
The Quality Policy of the department is to be, “An Effective Source of Technical Manpower for the Nation and to contribute to the growth of the Nation by constantly upgrading the quality of Technical Education by meeting the challenging needs of the twenty first century and effectively co-coordinating the activities of the Staff, Students and the Industry while keeping up the ethical and moral standards required”
The Department has been constantly modernizing the infrastructure and laboratory facilities. The Department is endowed with well-equipped laboratories in several of the areas. The laboratories and offices are well connected by an advanced LAN linking all other Departments and the Internet world outside. The available laboratories and facilities include:
Basic Electrical and Electronics Lab
This basic electrical & electronics lab is equipped with all types of electrical & electronics equipments with tools. This lab arranges for training the students for different joints of wires, basic knowledge about fundamentals of electrical & electronics engineering and exposes the students to different types of domestic wiring.
Electrical Machines lab
This lab is fully equipped with DC/AC machines with rectifier unit to train students on all aspects related to the performance of machines. This lab is also equipped with well designed. D.C.series, shunt, compound motors and generators with all sorts of A.C machines like single phase induction motor,3 phase slip ring and squirrel cage induction motor, synchronous motor, alternators, single phase and three phase transformers etc.An array of resistive, inductive, capacitive loads, MC and MI meters, digital tachometers, multi-meters provide a comprehensive range of training equipment in the machine lab.
Electronics Lab

The Electronics lab is well equipped with modern equipments to make the students updated. In this lab the students can conduct their experiments in detail like characteristic of oscillators, amplifiers, integrated circuits and also semiconductor components of diode, BJT, MOSFET, TRIAC and SCR
Microprocessor Lab
This lab has all microprocessor kits like INTEL 8085, 8086 with 8/16 bit to develop the programs for arithmetic operation, code converters, array related programs and interfacing with external equipments.
Digital Electronics lab
The lab is housed with full-fledged lab facilities like digital electronic kits to show the various characteristic of digital circuits includes tuned circuits, filter networks, logic circuits and Integrated circuits.
Measurement & Control Lab
In this lab the students are encouraged to learn about characteristic of Instrumentation amplifier, Signal converters, Transducers and innovative ideas using simulation software tools
Power electronics lab
The students are given special emphasis to the emerging use of power electronics in modern power systems, electrical drives and control. It is fully equipped with single phase, three phase converters, inverters, cyclo converter, chopper, commutator circuits, firing circuits, AC regulators. SPWM pulse based P-I controllers for motor control & MATLAB software is available in laboratory to enhance the knowledge of the students.
Power System Simulation Lab
As the state of the art the lab has PIV, 2.4 GHz Computer Systems with Networked Printer. The various power system problems of protection, control & stability were modeled, simulated and can be analyzed Using Matlab/simulink software.
Research consultancy and extension society
Overview of RC&E
In a world increasingly propelled by technology, institute research forms the mainspring of a nation's economic growth. Dept. of EEE in SMVEC emphasises innovation and technological development through its robust R&D axis. It has forged academic and research collaborations with institutes, universities, and industries to meet the immediate needs of society and the industry. The Dept. of EEE also remains committed to basic long-term research as the foundation for future development.
The key goal of the Dept. of EEE is to provide a creative atmosphere in which higher studies and research thrive amongst the students and the faculty. Along with fundamental research, many of the R&D projects offer opportunities to tackle “live” problems.
Vision and Mission of RC&E
Vision
Mission
The research cell has the broad mission of promoting and challenging new areas of electrical and electronics engineering with focus on basic research in all disciplines. It also encourages involvement of academic and research institutions to undertake research in identified areas. It also acts as a mechanism for inter-agency coordination with other agencies for better management of R&D funding through joint/ complimentary funding in major projects.
Role of the Research Consultancy and Extension Cell (RCE)
The Research Consultancy and ExtensionCell fosters the overall R&D growth of the EEE Department. It facilitates interaction with external agencies in India. It also promotes and manages Institute -Industry interaction, and all externally funded research and development projects.
RCE undertakes complete financial management, and recruitment of research engineers to work on funded projects. It also handles activities related to intellectual property protection and technology transfer.
Activities it Supports
The mandate of research supported by the RC&Ecell includes increased and expanded knowledge in basic research, excellence in electrical and electronics engineering, innovation and promotion of selected areas, encouragement for industrial partnership in projects under engineering and technology, training of manpower for future requirement and encouragement to young engineers.
The RC&Ecell has the broad mission of promoting and challenging new areas of electrical and electronics engineering with focus on basic research in all disciplines. It also encourages involvement of academic and research institutions to undertake research in identified areas.
Sponsored Research
A large number of new research projects are initiated every year with funding from various national and international organizations and industries. In addition, the Institute funds number of projects to new faculty initiating research, and also projects in specialized areas of Cross Disciplinary Research Groups. The total number of projects as well as the flow of funds have been steadily growing over the years.
Research Projects
